Preparing Your Home for Fall

It is that time of year. The leaves slowly change from a vibrant green to shades of red, orange, and yellow. The temperatures shift from beach days to cafes. It is that time of year where your house goes from summer vacation to cozy fall vibes! As much as we hate to say goodbye to summer, we are welcoming fall with open arms! Here are a couple of ways you can prepare your home for fall.

1. Clean Out Gutters and Put Away the Patio Furniture!

Have you checked your gutters? With the possibility of rain and even more so, brr snow, now is an excellent time to review your gutters.  Please make sure they are clear of debris such as leaves, sap, twigs and toys, even birds nests. Cleaning your gutters will help any water from rain and snow find a happy escape route ruining the rest of the house.

2. Prep Your Fireplace and Chimney!

With all those fall chills breezing through your home, it is about time you cleaned out your chimney! Remove ash and charred wood from last year’s fires and hire a chimney sweep. Make sure to stock your cupboard with lots of s’mores supplies and hot cocoa for those cozy fall nights by the fire. Fireplaces are the cornerstone for hangouts. That is why it is essential to make sure you have chairs, blankets, and extra décor to make your space super inviting.

3. Set Up Your Fall + Winter Toolbox

Autumn is the perfect time of year to make sure you have all the necessities for leaves and soon to be snow falling. Ensure you have all your supplies, such as a rake, shovel, bags, and more in an easily accessible space in your garage or shed. No one likes rummaging through a bunch of boxes trying to find a shovel.

4. Check Your Furnace/ Boiler, Vents, and Windows

Whether you have a furnace or boiler, it is always smart to make sure that everything is running smoothly by the time temperatures drop, get an inspection, change out filters, even clean out your ducts to make sure the air you are circulating in your home is at its best. Make sure to check your windows. Are they adequately sealed from the cold? Poorly sealed windows lead to heat escaping. In turn, this will help keep energy costs down and your wallet full.

5. We Saved the Best for Last, BREAK OUT THE FALL COLOURS!

Once you have done all the heavy work, it is time to break out all the fall feels. Decorate your fireplace with a wreath, some candles and fall flowers. Bring out the flannel and cocoa cups to sit on your deck and admire your hard work on raking leaves. Bring out the pumpkins and mums and decorate windows and steps. Here is the best part. Sit back with a blanket, a cup of cocoa, and some fall scents and enjoy your home.

Happy Fall!
