Nestled at the base of the Niagara Escarpment, a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, Milton is an often overlooked gem by home buyers. Seen as a sleepy town with an agricultural background, Milton Ontario is known for formerly being a farming community. But the once fastest growing community in North America has evolved into a metropolitan lifestyle with a small town appeal.

Whether buying or selling a home, it pays to be up to date on what’s happening in the market, right now. Get the latest insights, straight from our experts by signing up for our newsletter.

Is Milton a City or a Town?

The list of Milton events and Milton activities has grown exponentially over the last few decades- along with the number of households. Once Canada’s fastest growing community, we’re often asked: “Is Milton a city?” While the population of more than 132,000 people allows for city status, it remains a town- and likely will for many years to come.

Located in the heart of Halton region and forming a part of the GTA, Milton is only 40km to Toronto- making it a great location for commuters. With GO train and bus service available from our centrally located transit station, or options to travel to Oakville for a broader schedule.

The Homes of Milton, Ontario

From compact condominium apartments to large estate homes and everything in between, the Milton housing market has a great blend of housing types to meet all budgets. Established in 1857, Milton is rich with historical homes, some of which hold designated heritage status and protection. From there, several neighbourhoods were established in 1950, 1970, 1980, 2000 and onward.

The largest boom took place from 2001-2011, seeing population grow from 31,400 to 84,300.  Current estimates suggest a population of 228,000 by 2031- in which expected demand should produce a very positive housing market for the years to come. Building a relationship with a local Milton Realtor to stay apprised of future development, home values and neighbourhood statistics is key.

Things to Do in Milton

Milton’s homes aren’t the only historical elements that still exist. The Milton Fall Fair has been running every September since 1854. Located at the Robert Street fairgrounds, it’s an event locals look forward to. With agricultural elements such as livestock competitions, fruits and vegetable displays and a farmer bale toss, the fair also has an ever-growing carnival-like mainway with rides, games and vendors.

The Friday and Saturday night feature is the incredibly popular smash-up derby- where resident gearheads vie for the coveted position of last car standing.

The farmer’s market is another long-standing tradition and one of Milton’s many award-winning downtown events. Every Saturday from May to October, area farmers, bakers, florists, butchers and vendors gather to showcase their goods to the community at fair prices. Hosted rain or shine, the farmer’s market is the perfect place to pick up weekly groceries, while enjoying bacon-on-a-bun in support of the Milton Chamber of Commerce Scholarship Café.
